Barbara B., M.Ed., DT

Developmental Therapist, Certified Early Intervention Specialist

Barbara’s 30 years of experience in the field includes a variety of service-related roles. She first spent 14 years as a special education teacher in centers offering special needs programs for toddlers/preschoolers. After earning her Master’s degree in 1990, she joined a not-for-profit organization serving people with developmental disabilities, where she served as an Early Intervention Services administrator and supervisor while continuing to treat children with special needs. She then dedicated six years to serving as a Developmental Evaluator in a hospital’s neonatal follow-up clinic. Since 1998 she has worked independently as a Developmental Therapist, specializing in Early Intervention.

Karen T., B.S., DT

Developmental Therapist, Certified Early Intervention Specialist

Karen joins the Shining Star Therapy team with more than 15 years of experience in Early Childhood education; a Bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University in Early Childhood Studies with a Preschool Special Education approval; and an 04 Teacher Certification. She has worked in both private daycare settings as a director and school districts as a teacher, which includes two years in Special Education classrooms. She is accustomed to working within a diverse community and with children who have special needs.

Maria C., B.S., PT

Physical Therapist, Certified Early Intervention Specialist

Maria earned her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy in 1986 from Northern Illinois University. She began her career as a staff therapist in a rehab facility, an acute care center, and in the Rockford Public School system. Since then she has worked as an independent therapist, a staff therapist for the Easter Seals Children’s Development Center, and for Rockford Memorial Hospital. Maria has specialized in Early Intervention since 2008, and she is an Early Intervention Evaluator as well. She is especially proud of earning Pediatric Therapy Employee of the Year in 2007 while working at Easter Seals.

Mary L., B.S., DT

Developmental Hearing Specialist, Developmental Therapist, Certified Early Intervention Evaluator & Specialist

Mary joins the Shining Star team with 12 years of experience as a Developmental Therapist-Hearing Specialist. After earning her B.S. degree in education with an emphasis in deaf education, she worked in an academic setting for several years with hearing-impaired children from preschool through 12th grade. In this role she also wrote, taught and helped implement Individual Education Program goals. Since then she has worked independently as a Developmental Therapist-Hearing Specialist with Early Intervention children. Her responsibilities included teaching families how to communicate, interact, and play with their child; creating teaching materials for each child; preparing progress reports; and conducting mid-term and annual evaluations. Mary’s skill set includes using and teaching American Sign Language.

Terri H., B.S., DT

Developmental Therapist, Certified Early Intervention Specialist

Terri has dedicated more than 20 years of her career to working as an Early Intervention child development therapist. This includes working for organizations as well as for herself, treating children in private homes, preschools, and hospitals. The past several years she has worked as a service coordinator for the Child and Family Connections Center serving Winnebago and Ogle counties. In this capacity she met with families to introduce the Early Intervention program, scheduled evaluations, assisted in determining eligibility, managed and maintained records, and assisted families with transitioning to an early childhood preschool program. While she found this role rewarding, Terri is excited to return to the role of treating children.
